but what should I wear?

This is the age old question.. I ask it every day. lol

The answer is, anything you’re heart desires!

but seriously!

I want you to feel CONFIDENT & COMFORTABLE. That is my key for getting amazing portraits, you feel great - you look great!

STEP 1 :

THE KIND OF SESSION

Every session is different. You’ll need to evaluate what you specific session is focusing on, and go from there.

Graduates - staying true to your personality as well as School colors, activities, sports you like.

Families - are you wanting to be glam, casual, or somewhere in between? What season are you booking in? Are you looking to use these for a specific event?

Engagements & Couples - something timeless, usually have an outfit change, so I like to do dressy then casual. But always want to incorporate your personalities!

Branding - the feelings you want to portray to your clients. Business-like, fun, casual, cozy, bright, airy, moody, sexy!

etc.

STEP 2:

PICK YOUR PALETTE

What colors do you like? what do you look best in?

Finding colors that suit your skin tone and look great on camera is really an important step.

I like to start with my basics/neutrals to build the foundation of the outfit(s) first and then add in a sprinkle of color and pattern!! Or, just go all neutral!

I personally love photographing reds, oranges, greens, blues and neutrals!

STEP 3:

COORDINATION, NOT MATCHY MATCHY

If you’re dressing a group - figure out who the most difficult person is to choose an outfit for. Find something they will like or tolerate, and build the groups outfits around them.

You’ll want to coordinate, not match. Unless it’s for a special vision you have!

If you’re a Tech grad - make sure your outfits look good with your stole especially if you plan to wear red. It’s not the WORST thing for the reds not to match, but it always helps if they don’t clash.

STEP 4 : WEAR WHAT YOU LIKE

The worst thing is knowing someone doesn’t like/or doesn’t feel comfortable in what they are wearing during a session. It’s already sometimes uncomfortable being in front of a camera as hard as us photographers try to make it comfy!

& sometimes the best choice is an outfit that breaks all the rules!! A hot pink blazer, or a loud print dress that looks STUNNING - I’m down for it!
